The Garden of Words, also known as Kotonoha no Niwa in Japanese, is a 2013 anime drama film directed, written, and edited by Makoto Shinkai. It was produced by CoMix Wave Films and released by Toho. In place of Tenmon, who had composed the music for numerous Shinkai films in the past, Daisuke Kashiwa is the composer for the film, which stars Miyu Irino and Kana Hanazawa.
Senri Oe composed and sang the theme song “Rain” back in 1988. Motohiro Hata rewrote the song specifically for the movie. The movie was adapted into a manga in the same year that it was released, featuring illustrations by Midori Motohashi and a novelization by Shinkai.

The Garden of Words premiered on April 28, 2013 at the Gold Coast Film Festival in Australia, and it was released in Japan on May 31, 2013. The film was shown in Japan alongside an animated short called Dareka no Manazashi (, lit. Someone’s Gaze), also directed by Shinkai. The Garden of Words had an unusual release schedule, as it was released digitally on iTunes on the same day as the Japanese theatrical premiere, and its DVD and Blu-ray were released on June 21, while the film was still in theatres.
Story of The Garden of Words 2013
Takao Akizuki (, Akizuki Takao), a 15-year-old student and aspiring shoemaker, skips his first class to sketch shoe designs in the garden at Shinjuku Gyoen at the start of the rainy season in Tokyo. There, he meets Yukari Yukino (, Yukino Yukari), a 27-year-old woman who is not working. Yukari bids him farewell with a tanka (a type of Japanese poetry), which perplexes Takao as to its origin and meaning. On rainy mornings, the two continue to run into each other and socialise in the park, but they never formally introduce themselves.
Takao makes the decision to sew herself a pair of shoes. He quits going to the park when the rainy season ends and concentrates on his work.
